Why I Run

What does it take to compete in the Boston Marathon? And why do people do it? Whether you're in it to win or just to finish, whether you're doing it for your health, a cause, a loved one, or to reclaim the race after last year's tragic ending, we want to hear about it.

Are you competing in the 2014 Boston Marathon?

The reasons why people participate in the Boston Marathon are as diverse as the tens of thousands of entrants who come from across the country and around the world to take part in one of our city's oldest and most loved traditions. But this year, many will race -- either using their feet or their wheelchairs -- with the events of 2013 on their minds.

The bombing at the finish line last year abruptly halted the race, left three dead, hundreds injured, and a city in shock. The Boston Marathon has always been about resiliency, endurance, and feats of strength -- both physical and emotional. This year, that will be even more true, as thousands head toward Boylston Street and even more line the route through eight communities to cheer them on.

So what does it take to cross the finish line of the Boston Marathon? And why do people do it? Whether you're in it to win or just to finish, whether you're doing it for your health, a cause, a loved one, or if you're competing to reclaim the race after last year's tragic ending, we want to hear about it.
